Brutus Östling, born in 1958, grew up in Stockholm but now lives in the south of Sweden. After working as a publisher for twenty-seven years, he is now a full-time nature photographer. His pictures of birds are published in magazines around the world, and his photo books have also been issued in Great Britain and the USA, among other countries.
2005 saw the publication of Mellan vingspetsarna (in English as Between the Wingtips and Life on the Wing) – photographs of the life of birds from the Swedish island of Öland to the Antarctic. This book is also available in Norwegian. His book, Örnarnas rike/The Kingdom of the Eagles, published in 2007, was honoured as Panda Book of the Year 2008 by HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Mellan vingspetsarna received the same honour in 2006 – the Panda Book of the Year is a prize for the best nature description in words and images published during the year in Sweden.
Bruno Östling was awarded the title Nordic Nature Photographer of the Year in 2007 – a prize awarded by FOTO magazine in cooperation with Vårgårda Festival of Nature Photography.
In 2005 he was honoured with the title Nature Photographer of the Year with an accompanying stipend provided by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, and the following citation: Brutus Östling has been awarded the stipend for his exceptional capability of capturing the behaviour of birds in photographs. With crystal-clear sharpness he portrays the most short-lived moments in the hectic life of birds. Östling has a fantastic feeling for placing himself in the right place at the right time.
Pingvinliv/Penguins was nominated for the prestigious August Prize in 2006.
