A dog is without doubt a huntsman’s most important tool, second only to his weapon. Apart from the fact that a good sporting dog will make your hunting more effective, it is also much nicer to hunt with a dog beside you than without one.
As opposed to the other aids a huntsman has, a dog is a living being and thus demands endlessly more care than, say, the most sophisticated weapon. A shotgun can be left by itself locked away in the gun cupboard when there is no hunting, but a dog has to be cared for every day of the year. Most of that care consists of trivial things such as food and going out for walks, but all sporting dogs also need to be ‘brought up’ and trained and stimulated, although of course this varies according to dog breed and how the dog is to be used.
In Sporting dogs, all the sporting breeds and their specialities are presented in words and pictures. There is also a thorough section on training and some interesting information about breeding sporting dogs. In all, this is a complete guide and reference work for all huntsmen and others who are interested in sporting dogs.
Sten Christoffersson is a huntsman and he has his own sporting dogs. He also trains sporting dogs and is a well known for his writings on dogs and sporting dogs.
