In the mid-1960s, Käbi Laretei gives a concert in Carnegie Hall. After her arrival back home, she receives a letter in which an American publisher, Clay Coss, offers to sponsor a number of concerts for her in the USA. This marks the beginning of a long and strange relationship, in which Käbi Laretei, Clay Coss and his wife Eva make up the three parts.
During a period of ten years, a strong friendship grows up between the three, but a friendship with elements of obsession from the side of the Coss couple. Toner och passioner is built up like Hindemith’s work Ludus Tonalis (Play of Tones), with fugues separated by interludes and intermezzi. Käbi Laretei describes meetings with hypersensitive conductors and eccentric colleagues, the endless moment behind the stage door before entry, the various personalities of concert grands, relations to friends and lovers. All now recounted with warmth and liveliness by a woman with considerable experience of life.
