Every year, more than 7,000 women in Sweden are given the diagnosis: ‘breast cancer’. It means that life changes for many years to come, for the person who is affected as well as for her family and friends.
This is a very down-to-earth and practical book for everybody who has been affected by breast cancer. Here are facts and practical advice, interspersed with interviews. An aid during the entire process from when you first suspect you might have got breast cancer, to how the examination is done, what the doctor’s information means – in a medical sense but also mentally – various forms of treatment and which side-effects you might suffer.
The viewpoint of family and friends is dealt with too. What do you say to the children? But also such questions as: Can you go to the gym? Should I follow a special diet? What should one say to the people one works with? Can I keep on working?
The book is based on interviews with doctors, hospital social workers, and breast cancer patients.
Nowadays, the survival rate for breast cancer patients is very high, due to the fact that there is a great deal of research and there are new methods of treatment every year.
Facts: In Sweden, of the women with breast cancer who were diagnosed and treated during 1995-2000, 70% were still alive after five years. Of those that were first diagnosed 2000-2004, 82% were still alive after five years. Of those who will be diagnosed in 2010, about 95% will be still be alive five years later. Many scientists believe that everyone will survive breast cancer in ten years.
Ann Sköld Nilsson is the new director of the Rabén & Sjögren publishing house. She was previously the Managing Director of the Swedish Children’s Bookclub and Marketing Director of The Body Shop. She became ill with breast cancer one and a half years ago.
