In the follow-up to Män som hatar kvinnor/The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it is Lisbeth Salander who is the focus of the story. A series of dramatic events recall Lisbeth’s dark past, and when she is drawn into a murderous hunt in which she is the prey, she decides to settle with her past once and for all.

Meanwhile, Mikael Blomkvist at Millennium has gotten wind of a hot news story. Two journalists, Dag and Mia, have uncovered revealing information about an extensive sex trafficking operation between Eastern Europe and Sweden. Many of the people who are implicated hold responsible positions in society. When Dag and Mia are brutally murdered and suspicion directed at Salander, Blomkvist decides to conduct his own investigation. He soon uncovers a connection between the murders and the trafficking story. The feared Zala, whose name constantly pops up in course of the investigation, also turns out to have links to one Lisbeth Salander...
