Den moderna döden

The Modern Death

by Carl-Henning Wijkmark

A number of scientists, politicians and intellectuals gather at a course center by Öresund to privately discuss the issue of how to solve the demographic problem. Fewer and fewer people have to support more and more and people are showing less and less inclination to die.

During the discussions two options are carved out.
One is based on the introduction of strong incentives for people to voluntarily end their lives, the second is based on much more active screening. Someone raise the issue of the ethical problems, but the practical perspective
wins in the discussions.

When this satire was written the problem of the aging population was rather hypothetical. Today it is a central issue that employs every social scientist and it breaks into every political discussion on the preservation of the welfare system and no one seems to be able to see a definitive solution.
