Approaching Night is a story about life’s final chapter and a meditation on the ultimate questions.
Terminal illness has brought together four men in Ward 5. There’s the stranger from the other side of the globe; Börje, the compulsive gambler who bets on eternal life; Harry, the hobo, the only one who qualifies as a gentleman. There are the nurses Birgit and Angela, dearly loved by these men marked by death, the wise priest Anna-Britta, and the unfeeling Dr. Möller. And above all, there’s Hasse, the narrator, who, when the future fails, reconciles himself to his past, his passions and disappointments before a silent visitor appears and receives his life’s farewell.
Carl-Henning Wijkmark was born in Stockholm in 1934.
