The Man in the Room
A university student spends most of his time alone in a small studio flat that has a strong smell of mold. He is driven by a nameless quest and a nondescript longing, and at the same time he is drawn to other odd existences who, like himself, are battling the eternal questions.
One night he wakes up to the images of a TV documentary about the first A-bomb and its originator, Robert Oppenheimer. For a brief moment he senses something extraordinary: the future of the world and mankind capsulated in a metal bullet. This prompts what will be an almost manic attempt to write a book, in order to solve the Oppenheimer riddle.
Later he encounters photographer Pavel who is completing a series of pictures portraying dead people – some simulated, some real. Pavel’s wish is that the last photograph shall show his own dead body dangling from the ceiling. But he needs someone to take the picture.
Dimitris Alevras’ second novel The Man in the Room is a subdued yet dramatic story about man and death.
Dimitris Alevras was born 1981 in Lund. His debut novel The World’s Last Night was published in 2015 to great acclaim.
